I am Mihai Stoica, a photographer and image retoucher based in Bucharest. I shoot a diverse range of subjects for commercial and editorial clients, with natural light or on-site studio lighting for a clean and elegant aesthetic.

I see photography as the perfect playground to challenge the natural light aesthetic and push toward a fantasized, elegant visual style.
Moving beyond my photojournalism roots, I aim to craft a cinematic style that blends the bold, edgy look of advertorial work with the rich, moody atmosphere inspired by Renaissance paintings.
I create small, controlled environments where light defies the rules of natural lighting, revealing textures and details through deep, smooth shadows and silky highlights.
By combining technical precision with artistic vision, I help brands and creatives produce striking visuals that captivate and leave a lasting impression.

With a background in electrical engineering, I am “hard wired” for the technical aspects of photography. I constantly seek new ways to use technology to achieve results that are predictable, precise, and repeatable, while remaining flexible enough to allow subtle creative adjustments that meet client expectations.
My training and experience lean toward the analytical side. Professionally, I favor colors with clinical accuracy and clear images that combine depth and mystery through deep, diffuse shadows contrasted by highlights that emphasize shape and texture. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring more experimental techniques such as long exposures, vivid color mixes, creative white balance, and optical effects.
My artistic vision often emerges from finding creative solutions to technical challenges.
I began my career as a photo editor and later specialized in retouching for magazine and advertising clients. This early experience taught me to be goal-oriented and to structure my workflow around achieving the final desired result.
Initially, I retouched images for a diverse range of clients, each with its own unique style and requirements. Over time, I refined my personal visual dataset, learning what to emphasize and what to avoid when creating an image.
One of my first major challenges was adapting already-shot images to fit design pipelines for print and online display. As a retoucher, I polished images after many creative decisions had been made, focusing on meeting the high standards of demanding clients.
Transitioning into my own photography projects, I found myself balancing two lighting philosophies: the organic, sincere look of a single large soft light, and the bold, dramatic effect of multiple focused hard lights that emphasize key features with mysterious shadows.
While my visual style continues to evolve, I have found a balance between soft and hard lighting. I have developed a clear understanding of the relationship between production and post-production, valuing precision and quality throughout the process.
Recently, I have been experimenting with hard light used with a soft touch, aiming to create a unique twist on classical cinematic lighting. My goal is to produce a painterly visual style directly from the capture, and only using my retouching and post-production skills to elevate the final image.

I offer on-location shoots with a full production setup, including multiple lights and all necessary equipment to ensure professional results.
To guarantee the highest quality on-site, I use tethered shooting connected to a calibrated mobile workstation and graphics tablet, allowing real-time image review and precise adjustments during the shoot.

While a mobile workstation is available on the day of production to transfer and visualize the captured images in real time on larger screens, the full process of selecting and carefully developing the digital negatives to fit into the desired visual style requires complete attention and time.
The processes involved start with developing the images with proper tone and color for client selection and approval. This process is followed by a stage of retouching finer details, removing unwanted minor elements or enhancing different parts of the image.
Every image is carefully and individually polished to fit into the required guidelines according to the client specifications.
